Politicians use them to win votes, pharmaceutical companies to  market products, and the media to spice up their headlines - statistics  are ubiquitous. But how well are they understood? Scientists at the Max  Planck Institute for Human Development and the Dartmouth Medical School,  writing in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, warn us about  the pitfalls of statistics and tell us how to interpret them more easily  and accurately.
